Indeed, they counted on His grace, though they felt it not, relished it not, in no way valued it as of God; but still they so expected grace in our Lord's dealing with so heinous a sinner as the one before them, that they hoped thereby to commit Him fatally in the eyes of men. The fact that God did not hear the prayer of a bad man is a basic thought of the Old Testament. Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this. proseku, nhsen auvtw|/) kai. Now if, while we are plunged in blindness and thus humbled by the Lord, we still flatter ourselves in our darkness, and oppose our mad views to heavenly wisdom, we need not wonder if the vengeance of God fall heavily upon us, so that we are rendered doubly blind This very punishment was formerly inflicted on the wicked and unbelievers (280) under the Law; for Isaiah is sent to blind the ancient people, that, seeing they may not see: blind the heart of this people, and shut their ears, (Isaiah 6:9.). Such was the aim of His heart, at all cost to Himself; but the effect was moral in one way or the other, and this now. So they said to the blind man: "What is your opinion about him, in view of the fact that he opened your eyes?" "If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. As Jesus passed by He saw a man which was blind The more the man argued with them, the angrier the Pharisees became. Might be made blind - Such would be the effect of his preaching. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy." 1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) 3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. Christ restored bodily sight to many, he never took it away from Somewhat similarly in John 8:1-59 He is the rejected Word, who confesses Himself (when most scorned and men are ready to stone Him) to be the everlasting God Himself. This consistent, John introduces the gospel by saying, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Nothing that was made was made without him; all things were made by Him. In other words, that it was all preset by God in that sense that he was born blind in order that God might do a work of healing him. Such is the truth. If you sprang your ankle, you could not run cold water on it because the cold water had a healing effect, so you just had to suffer with the pain until the Sabbath day was over and then you could start running cold water on it. The special form of the word rendered judgment in this place is used nowhere else by St. John, and indicates that what is here thought of is not the act of judging, but the concrete resultthe sentence pronounced after judgment. The subsequent notice we have is the remarkable desire expressed by the Greeks, through Philip, to see Jesus. And this they then knew, however dull in perceiving the consequences. He was ever the stranger here. The voice of the law spoke to their ears of a Christ continuing for ever; but a Son of man humbled, dying, lifted up! But to find fault with the statement that Christ did in His own spirit realize beforehand what He was going to suffer on the cross, is to overlook much of His sufferings, to ignore truth, and despise Scripture either leaving out a large portion of what God records about it, or confounding it with the actual fact, and only a part of it after all. They had learnt and trifled with the law up to this time; they had freely used it, as men do still, to convict other people. The light of Jehovah might be ever so bright, but the heart of the people was gross. state of physical blindness, and has received the faculty of sight. Hence, along with this, there comes the full answer of God to the divine glory and perfection of Christ. The consequence is, there is no permanence for them, any more than liberty. Walking accordingly in this world, He waited for the word of His Father. Jesus was evidently alluding to Isaiah 6:10; Isaiah 42:19. Unfortunately, many believers today function as if the Holy Spirit is the bench . These people trust in themselves, not in what God has to say. We ought to be the more careful that none of us, through a foolish and extravagant opinion of his wisdom, draw down upon himself this dreadful punishment.
